Group Habits

This year, we are going to practice the way of Jesus together as a church family. We are going to do that through our Journey Groups and Discipleship Groups. Each month, we will focus on a different practice that we highlight at HCC and there will be four small habits to practice for four weeks each month. Participants are invited to do all four habits, just one habit, or take the habits deeper. The goal of practicing the way of Jesus is not achievement but transformation. Jesus cares a lot more about who you are becoming than what you achieve in life.

September - PRAYER

“…’Lord, teach us to pray.’” – Luke 11:1

We kick off our journey of practices with prayer, a cornerstone of practicing the way of Jesus. The goal of prayer is to transform your mind to think of God as Father, friend, and advocate. We often can see God as some sort of cosmic genie or maybe even a distant rule maker. Discover the presence of God in prayer this month in these four ways:

  • Each morning, spend five minutes praying the Prayer of Examen, by praying through Psalm 139:23-24 examining your heart before God.
  • Spend 15 minutes a day in silence listening to God. Use the Centering Prayer guide to help.
  • At least two times during the week, practice an extended time of Praying the Room. Either pray the room with just you, or you can pray the room by praying for another.
  • Participate in the Prayer-Fast for the month of September. On the last Wednesday of the month, fast through lunch and spend an hour in prayer.
